Why 2026 is the year where Sustainability Is Central to Channel Strategy in 2026 Nancy Powell, HP Sustainability Lead, UK&I and EMEA 

For much of the last decade, sustainability has sat alongside performance. It was acknowledged, but rarely the factor that changed the course of a deal once momentum built around technical and commercial decisions.

In 2026, the point where technical decisions and sustainability expectations meet is showing up much earlier in conversations, particularly for the channel. Partners are not only helping customers express their sustainability ambitions. More often, they are being asked to validate those ambitions through the choices they recommend and the solutions they deliver.

This has been building quietly for some time, with AI scaling quickly, infrastructure estates expanding, and energy use harder to gloss over. At the same time, customers are asking more direct questions about the choices being made on their behalf. They are less interested in broad commitments and more focused on how day-to-day decisions translate into impact.

When sustainability starts influencing outcomes

One of the clearest places this shift is visible is in procurement, where sustainability is no longer framed as something aspirational or future-facing. For resellers, that changes the tone of the discussion. Customers want to understand what refresh decisions mean over time, how infrastructure choices affect emissions, and what happens after deployment. Further, these questions are no longer confined to sustainability teams. They are becoming part of how value is assessedacross the board.

Partners who are comfortable engaging at this level are finding it easier to build credibility amongst customers. This is less about having a polished sustainability narrative and more about being able to talk transparently about trade-offs and progress toward sustainability goals.

AI brings sustainability closer to the architecture conversation

AI has become central to growth conversations across the channel. It is driving demand and opening new opportunities, but it is also pulling sustainability into sharper focus in parts of the business where it has historically been easier to look away. As compute demand increases, customers are starting to ask how workloads are designed, how efficiently infrastructure is being used, and what that means over time. These questions tend to surface when energy consumption, operating cost or reporting obligations come into focus.

Not every AI task needs to run in a centralised environment, and advances in on-device processing are expanding the options available. In some cases, running AI workloads locally on AI-capable PCs can reduce data movement and improve efficiency, while also supporting performance and security objectives.

The channel sits in the middle of that tension. Partners are not being asked to slow innovation, but they are being asked to help customers think more carefully about how it is delivered. In that context, sustainability becomes part of good architectural decision-making rather than a separate box to tick.

Responsibility does not end at deployment

A less visible but equally important shift is also underway. Customers are fundamentally reassessing how value is defined across the full lifecycle of their technology. This is drawing resellers into more strategic, longer-term discussions around maintenance, reuse and end-of-life planning. Extending the useful life of devices is increasingly recognised as a sound operational decision, not a trade-off. It enables greater continuity, more disciplined cost management and a reduced environmental footprint.

At HP, through our takeback operations, we consistently see that a large proportion of equipment still has meaningful life left in it. Secure refurbishment and redeployment are often viable options, which is prompting more customers to pause and question whether replacement cycles are being driven by genuine need, or simply by long-established habit.More broadly, there is a growing recognition that extending the life of technology often delivers greater value than treating recycling as the default endpoint.

Why collaboration is becoming unavoidable

For many partners, Scope 3 continues to present the greatest sustainability challenge, given its breadth across the wider value chain and the limited control partners have over it. What is becoming clearer in 2026 is that no part of that value chain can address this alone. Partners are increasingly expected to present customers with data, show their alignment to impact measurement, explain methodologies and highlight current limitations. This level of transparency can make for some challenging conversations,and those Partners looking for engagement, collaboration and alignment are those that are most prepared for this evolving conversation with the customer. It certainly seems that Resellers who invest time in understanding lifecycle impact, who are comfortable discussing trade-offs, and who engage earlier in sustainability discussions are finding it easier to build strong customer relationships on this theme. Not because they have all the answers, but because they are part of this dynamic discussion.

As expectations continue to rise, sustainability will become less of a standalone topic and more of a lens through which technology decisions are judged. For the channel, that represents a change in narrative, but also an opportunity to play a more strategic role in how customers think about technology and its impact over time.
